Candle fragrance calculator
Calculate wax and fragrance weights for a batch of candles or wax melts.
How to use this calculator
- Check that your wax and fragrance instructions use a wax-weight percentage, and confirm their limits.
- Choose what you have or want to make, then enter your weight and chosen fragrance load.
- Calculate and weigh the ingredients. A candle count also gives equal weights per fill.
Worked example
Arithmetic example, not a recommended fragrance load: to make 100 g of finished scented mixture at 10% fragrance relative to wax weight, divide 100 by 1.10. Weigh approximately 90.909 g wax and 9.091 g fragrance oil. Starting with 100 g of wax instead needs 10 g fragrance and produces 110 g total. For four 100 g finished fills, scale the first example to about 363.636 g wax and 36.364 g fragrance.
Questions about this calculation
Is fragrance percentage based on wax or the finished candle?
This calculator uses fragrance weight divided by wax weight, multiplied by 100. That matches the wax-based formula in the linked CandleScience enamel-mug tutorial. For example, 10 g oil added to 100 g wax is 10% of wax weight, but about 9.091% of the 110 g final mixture. Confirm that your supplier uses this convention.
How do I calculate wax and oil for a fixed finished fill weight?
Divide the desired finished wax-plus-fragrance weight by 1 + (fragrance percentage ÷ 100) to get wax weight. Multiply that wax weight by fragrance percentage ÷ 100 to get fragrance oil. Do not subtract the wax-based percentage directly from the finished fill weight.
Can I enter an 8 fl oz jar or millilitres as the fill weight?
No. Jar capacity is a volume, while this tool needs the finished wax-plus-fragrance fill weight, excluding container and wick. Wax and fragrance densities vary, so there is no generic mL-to-grams or fluid-ounce-to-weight conversion in this calculator. Ounces in the unit selector are ounces by weight.
What fragrance percentage should I use?
Use the instructions and limits for your exact wax, fragrance and intended application. Wax capacity and fragrance usage restrictions are separate checks, and their percentage bases may differ. This calculator does arithmetic; it does not recommend a percentage, verify product compatibility or certify a safe candle. Test the finished wax, fragrance, wick and container system.
Can I use it for wax melts?
Yes, for the same wax-weight percentage calculation when your wax and fragrance instructions use that convention. Enter a batch total or a known finished fill weight and count. Follow the exact product instructions for wax-melt use and fragrance limits.
