Strength & unit guide
Rough scale only: household bleach is commonly in the tens of thousands of mg/L; stronger commercial or pool products can exceed 100,000 mg/L. Product type alone does not tell you the correct value.
If the manufacturer states available chlorine in g/L, multiply by 1,000: 50 g/L → 50000 mg/L; 125 g/L → 125000 mg/L.
Labels such as 5–6%, 8.25% and 10–12.5% are not direct mg/L conversions. Sodium hypochlorite %, available chlorine %, weight and volume bases differ; density may also be needed. Use the manufacturer’s available-chlorine mg/L or g/L value.

How the calculation works
Bleach volume = final volume × target available chlorine ÷ source available chlorine. Both concentrations must use the same mg/L basis. “ppm” here is shorthand for approximately mg/L in a dilute aqueous solution, not a conversion from a concentrated product’s weight percentage.
No density is assumed. Arithmetic keeps full precision; display values are rounded estimates. Use product-specific instructions to select the target and prepare the solution. This is not a drinking-water treatment calculator.

FAQs
Can I enter the sodium hypochlorite percentage on my bottle?
No. This tool needs available chlorine in mg/L. Sodium hypochlorite percentage by weight is a different measurement and cannot be converted without additional product-specific information. We no longer guess density or choose a nearby strength. If the required value is unavailable, follow the manufacturer’s dilution instructions.
Does a 200, 500 or 1000 ppm target make a solution suitable for a particular use?
No. A target is an arithmetic input, not a recommendation for food-contact surfaces, toys, outbreaks or any other application. Follow the exact product label and applicable requirements for concentration, contact time, rinsing and handling.
Why are very small doses not exportable?
This household tool blocks copy, label and QR output below 1 mL of bleach. This is a conservative measuring guard, not an equipment standard. Increase the final batch size and use suitable graduated equipment. A displayed positive amount is never silently rounded to zero.
Does the calculation account for old bleach or chlorine consumed by dirt?
No. C1 × V1 = C2 × V2 assumes the stated source concentration and no loss of available chlorine. Storage, product age and chlorine demand can change the actual concentration. Follow product instructions and any required concentration testing.
